Kaithapram village is famous for maintaining old vedic traditions, with many age-old ‘illams’. It is a sleepy hamlet, which became famous in the modern times because of people like lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and many others in the film field, including Kaithapram Viswanathan Namboothiri and Madhu Kaithapram. And now the state government is planning to protect the village near Payyannur in the district, considering its heritage that transcends ages.
Shrauta yajnas were held at few places but were rare in Kerala before the 70s. It has been heard that a hundred years ago, a Soma sacrifice was performed in Perunjallur village in northern Kerala Agnyadhana also took place in isolation and at very long intervals.
About 1000 years ago King Kolathiri invited a group of families belonging to Shishyas of Ramachandrapuram Madam, Gokarna. They settled between Perinjallur and Payannur spread over 9 villages and Kaithapram is one of them. They adopted Malayalam Namboothiri system.
In ancient times there was no one who was not a Vedic scholar. It is only hearsay that there were some Adithiris (Ahitagnis). Undoubtedly, all were svadhyayagnis. Kaitapram is the land of the Brahmins, the Baudhayana Sutras of the Yajurvedas. There were very eminent scholars who were experts in Tantra, Jyotish, Purana, etc.. In the current era, there are several people who made their mark in modern areas.
